The Cheriton Players

Par For The Course

Playwright Peter Gordon Director Pauline Cornter

We were delighted to perform another brilliant comedy by Peter Gordon, who not only wrote us a nice foreword in the programme but drove all the way from York to come and see it! This is the third of Peter's plays that we have performed here, the first two being Murdered to Death and Third Week in August; but we feel sure it won't be the last.

Captain’s Day at the Seven Lakes Golf Club gets off to a bad start when the men’s Captain is indisposed. Club secretary, Simon, relishes the chance to take over but is soon thwarted by the arrival of Vice Captain, Nick and his girlfriend, Tiffany. Lady Captain, Fran, and enthusiastic but hopeless Barry add to the confusion as a series of disasters mount. With the unexpected arrival of Simon’s wife, Laura, tensions build and things go from bad to worse.

Set on the club house patio, the characters soon discover that personal relationships OFF the course are more dangerous than the hazards ON the course!

The cast was as follows:

Mike Cornter as Barry
David Cradduck as Simon
Glynn Williams as Nick
Bernadette Lomas as Tiffany
Jane Richards as Fran
Helena Gomm as Laura

Director: Pauline Cornter
Producer: Jan Conway
Stage Manager: Angela Ledsham
Lighting and Sound: Graham Arnott, Jamie Herdman and Peter Wilde

Once again, we played to full houses and our audiences loved it:

“I had a great time at the show on Wednesday, thank you! I took my mother along and we both really enjoyed it.”

“We very much enjoyed the play and fully recognised the various golf club types. I can think of members – and secretaries – at our local club I have known who fitted the characters to the tee (as it were!). Congratulations to the whole cast and a special bouquet to Tiffany, who was outstanding.”

“Very good last night. Very impressed”.

And our reviewers were very fair, too. This is from Eleanor Marsden for Winchester Today: “Lines are slick and cues picked up quickly and the entire cast have clearly relished the process of bringing these characters to life.” For the full review click here.

And Christopher Atkinson from the Hampshire Chronicle wrote:   “I’m not much of a golfer so I don’t know if the saying is true, but I think if I met the characters in Peter Gordon’s Par for The Course – performed masterfully by the Cheriton Players from November 29 to December 2 – I’d probably hang up my (theoretical) clubs for good”.
